Some of Our Distinctives

Some of the distinctives that you will encounter at Covenant Reformed Church, are

The Lordship of Jesus Christ: This affects everything. We believe that Jesus Christ is Lord of All. Because, if He is not Lord of All, then He is not Lord at all. Before Jesus ascended back to Heaven, He told His disciples that

“All authority in Heaven and Earth has been given to Him, therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

That means Jesus has All authority here on Earth. The Lordship of Christ has been unfortunately neglected in the Church today. We are seeking to restore this teaching to Church, and we are hopeful as to what the Lord will do when His Church acknowledges that Jesus Christ has All authority, and not we ourselves.

An Optimistic View of Life and the Future: This naturally flows from the Lordship of Christ. We believe that the Great Commission will be successful in History, because Jesus Himself actually believed that His Lordship would result in the nations being discipled and taught to obey Him. We believe the ancient promises of the Prophets, that the Knowledge of the Glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the seas. This is because Jesus Christ is Lord, He has been exalted high above all principalities and powers and rulers and dominions, in Heavenly places, and above every name which is named to the Glory of God the Father, and that means He has been exalted over the Devil, too. The “strong man” is bound, and Jesus is plundering his kingdom. As we sing each Christmas, He has come to make His blessings flow, as far as the curse is found! And that gives us great joy, because we have such a great hope, in such a great Lord!

Liturgical Worship: When God’s people come together to worship the Lord on the Lord’s day, we do so in a manner that is thoroughly God-centered. In fact, it is so God centered, that we don’t see ourselves as serving God, but rather, that God serves us, His people. He serves us when He Calls us into His presence, Cleanses us of our sins, Consecrates us with the Word of God, Communes with us at His table, and Commissions us to Proclaim the Gospel to the every creature. This “Covenant Renewal” pattern is revealed to us in the  OT sacrificial system, which was a type and a shadow that points us to Christ. We believe the pattern of the Sin Offering, the Ascension Offering, and the Peace Offering – in that order – are still applicable to us today. But because Jesus Christ has come, the fullness of the types and shadows now take on new Christ-centered meanings. Interestingly, this liturgical pattern that we use to renew covenant with God, is also the pattern of the whole Christian life, from beginning to end. God forgives us of our sins, He conforms us to His image with the Word of God, He invites us to His table to remember the death of Christ on our behalf, and then He tells us to go and make disciples. The Lord’s Service is simply a Gospel Structured Worship Service designed to recall God’s grace in our lives, from beginning to end.
